Vernon Hills woman recovering from more than 20 stab wounds

DEER PARK, Ill. (AP) - A 24-year-old Vernon Hills woman is recovering after police say she was stabbed by a co-worker more than 20 times.

Family members say Katie King's condition at an Arlington Heights hospital has been upgraded from critical to fair condition. They say she still can't speak but is communicating through written messages.

Police say King was attacked by 18-year-old Daniel Dion of Des Plaines inside of her car in the parking lot of Deer Park movie theater. Police say King was able to run for help after she was stabbed in the face, neck and lungs with a 4-inch serrated, combat knife.

Detectives say Dion told them that he invited King to a movie with the intent of killing her because she annoyed him.

Dion is charged with attempted murder and three counts of aggravated battery. A message seeking comment was left Monday at the Lake County Public Defender's Office.
