Naperville man admits stealing $332,000 in military equipment

A 51-year-old Naperville man has admitted to stealing computer equipment valued at more than $332,000 while working for a defense contractor in Afghanistan.

Timothy L. Maurer, who was a systems administrator for contractor Raytheon Corp., was charged last month with theft of government property.

According to court papers, Maurer admitted to stealing more than 150 computers and communications devices. The equipment was stolen from storage containers belonging to an Air Force squadron.

Prosecutors said Maurer resold the stolen equipment using various vendors.

While Maurer faced a maximum sentence of 10 years in prison if convicted, prosecutors are anticipating a sentence of two years in prison as part of a plea deal. He must serve at least 85 percent of the sentence.

Maurer is slated for an April 7 sentencing.
