Sheets of ice in downtown Arlington Hts.

A section of downtown Arlington Heights was closed Friday night due to a water main break, Arlington Heights police said.

Arlington Heights police Sgt. Chuck Buczynski said Dunton Avenue and Evergreen Avenue were closed between Campbell Street and Sigwalt Street, and Sigwalt was closed between Dunton and Vail Avenue.

Police said the break occurred at Sigwalt and Dunton about 6:30 p.m. A 10-inch water main pipe burst at the northwest corner of Sigwalt and Dunton.

Water started flowing north along Dunton Avenue and then, following the grade of the street, flooded the parking lot of the Evergreen Center shopping center and before flowing out onto Evergreen Street. The water subsequently turned into a sheet of ice.

Public works crews were working on the problem Friday night.

"They have to make sure it's all turned off first and then, obviously, they are going to have to dig up the ground and repair the pipe and then turn the water back on," Buczynski said.

A barricade was placed around the closed areas, but businesses were accessible by foot. Other than the public works crews working diligently, it was business as usual in the area Friday night, with patrons enjoying the movies at Star Cinema Grill and patrons at a local bar listening to a concert.

"Our parking garage wasn't affected," said Steve Cassa, manager of the Star Cinema Grill. "You could still get in and out. You just couldn't go down to the stop sign (at Sigwalt)."

Dave Warner, a resident of the Residences of Arlington Town Square, 77 S. Evergreen Ave., said "it doesn't look that bad, (considering) what I have heard."

Sigwalt between Dunton and Vail is probably going to be closed for a day or two, police said
