Cook County deputy going to prison for injuring inmate

CHICAGO (AP) - A former Cook County sheriff's deputy is going to federal prison after causing an inmate to fall and suffer serious injuries.

The U.S. Attorney's Office said Wednesday that 39-year-old Rafael Munoz was sentenced to one year in prison for violating the inmate's civil rights. Munoz pleaded guilty in September to using unreasonable force.

Authorities say the inmate was being held in the Maywood detention facility in 2010, when he asked Munoz to loosen his handcuffs.

Court records show that Munoz told the inmate to turn around, then pulled the man's ankle chains, causing him to flip forward and hit his head and face on the concrete floor. The man suffered a broken nose, broken tooth and other injuries.

Munoz admitted trying to cover up the incident by filing false reports.
