Mid-Michigan gets defensive against Harper

Mid-Michigan Community College (5-8) finished a season sweep of Harper College (7-9), defeating the host Hawks 54-49 in nonconference men's basketball play Saturday.

"Both teams defended well," said Mid-Michigan coach Kaleb House. "We hit a few more shots."

The Hawk most affected by the Lakers' defense was Admir Suljic. In the teams' first matchup Dec. 20, Suljic scored a career-high 35 points. This time, Harper's freshman guard finished with 10 after shooting 4-for-14 from the field.

"They took everything away from him," said first-year Harper coach Justin Welke.

"It was tough to get in the groove," Suljic said. "I have to fight through it."

The Hawks struggled collectively as well, finishing with 29 percent shooting from the field.

Davion Benton was the only other Hawk to reach double figures, with 10 points. Abdul Mushtaq had 9.

Welke said his squad has "a lot of things to work on in practice," in advance of a Wednesday contest against No. 1-ranked Rock Valley College (12-2) as North Central Community College Conference play gets started.
