Man who was shot after attacking Chicago officer dies

A 25-year-old man who was shot by a Chicago police officer after he lunged at the officer with a knife has died.

Authorities identified the man as Terrence Gilbert of Chicago. Police responded to a report of a threatened suicide Thursday evening. When they arrived they encountered Gilbert, who attacked an officer, striking his protective vest with a knife.

Police say the officer shot him after Gilbert charged him a second time. The Chicago Sun-Times reports Gilbert was shot twice in the torso. He was taken to Stroger Hospital where he died that night.

The injured officer was taken to a hospital with minor injuries and was in good condition.

Police recovered the knife used in the incident. They have referred questions to the Independent Police Review Authority.
