Tri-Cities filing over: Who's running for Campton Hills mayor?

Editor's note: In Geneva, 2nd Ward Alderman Don Cummings filed for re-election to a 4-year term.

Campton Hills Village President Patsy Smith is not seeking re-election after serving two terms in office.

But she is still challenging the petition filed by Trustee Harry Blecker, who wants to be the next president.

In Maple Park, nobody is running for the three village board seats available.

And in Geneva, two longtime city council members are stepping away.

Monday afternoon was the deadline for most candidates for municipal offices to file paperwork to get on the April consolidated-election ballot. Here is a town-by-town rundown:

Campton Hills

It is up in the air as to who will be on the ballot, as people are fighting over when candidates had to file their petitions.

A hearing is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. Tuesday before the Campton Hills Electoral Board to consider challenges Smith filed to a petition filed by Blecker. Smith also challenged the petitions of Trustees Laura Anderson and Susan George, and that of Michael O'Dwyer, who are seeking three 4-year terms on the village board.

Smith contends that they filed their petitions during the wrong time period, in November. That month is for towns that could have a February primary.

Batavia

There are one, maybe two, contested races for Batavia City Council.

Incumbents Alan Wolff, Dan Chanzit, Susan Stark, Lucy Thelin Atac and Dave Brown are unopposed in their bids for their 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th and 7th Ward seats.

Carl Dinwiddie filed for the 1st Ward seat, as did Alderman Carl Fischer. Fischer was appointed to the council in October to replace Garran Sparks, who moved out of town.

Michael Russotto and Ron Rechenmacher filed for the 6th Ward seat being vacated by Lisa Clark. Rechenmacher also filed for election to the Batavia school board, and says he intends to drop out of one of the races.

Geneva

First Ward Alderman Chuck Brown, who has served on the council 25 years in two stints since 1987, did not run for re-election. Neither did 4th Ward Alderman Dorothy Flanagan, who has served since 1993. Brown had announced in 2011 that this would be his last term.

Former Alderman Jim Radecki is seeking the 4th Ward seat, along with Eleanor Hamilton. Pat Lenski and Tara Burghart filed for the 1st Ward seat. Third and 5th Ward Aldermen Dean Kilburg and Craig Maladra, respectively, filed for 4-year terms. So did 2nd Ward Alderman Don Cummings. Third Ward Alderman Mary Seno is unopposed for a 2-year term to fill a vacancy, as is Alderman Tom Simonian for a 2-year term available in the 5th Ward.

St. Charles

St. Charles will see contested races for three of the five city council seats up for election in April.

In Ward 2, incumbent Rita Payleitner will square off against Jake Wyatt, a retired army colonel familiar to voters for his recent unsuccessful bid to become mayor.

In Ward 3, incumbent Todd Bancroft will see an opponent for his first time on the ballot. Mayor Ray Rogina appointed Bancroft to fill the unexpired term on in the Ward 3 seat, which Rogina served in before becoming mayor. Bancroft will square off against Naomi Bosko. Her LinkedIn profile lists her as a wines sales consultant at the Lux Marketing Group.

Ward 4 residents are guaranteed a new alderman as longtime incumbent Jim Martin will not seek re-election. Steven Gaugel, will take a second shot at the seat following an unsuccessful bid in 2011. Gaugel works in procurement at Fermilab. He will face Matthew Dowling. His LinkedIn profile lists him as the president of Discount Tire and Service Inc.

Incumbents Dan Stellato in Ward 1 and Ed Bessner in Ward 5 have no opponents.

Elburn

Trustees David Gauldoni and William Grabarek are seeking re-election. John D. Krukoff and Michael J. Rullman are also seeking seats. Three, 4-year terms are available.

Lily Lake

President Jesse Heffernan faces opposition from Mike L. Carlson. Incumbents Mary Rose Damisch and Janet Marlovits are seeking two of the three board seats. Wendy Ivancic is not seeking re-election. Marlovits is also running for the Central District 301 school board.

Sugar Grove

Village board incumbents Mari Johnson, David Paluch and Kevin Geary are unopposed.

North Aurora

Village board candidates filed their paperwork in November. The candidates are incumbents Mark Guethle, Mark Carroll and Laura Curtis, plus Anise Hesson and Allen Cavender.

The Kaneville, Virgil and Wayne clerks could not be reached late Monday afternoon.
