Cubs trade Ruggiano to Seattle for pitching prospect

With several young outfielders in the farm system looking to take the next step in Chicago, the Cubs traded 32-year-old Justin Ruggiano to Seattle for a pitching prospect Wednesday.

In the deal, the Cubs get right-hander Matt Brazis, 25, from the Mariners and open a spot on their 40-man roster.

Brazis, 25, was 8-6 with 14 saves and a 2.89 ERA in 100 minor league relief appearances over three seasons in the Mariners system. Last season, while with Single-A High Desert and Double-A Jackson, Brazis struck out 84 batters and walked 18 in 72.1 innings.

Ruggiano hit .281 (63-for-224) with 6 home runs and 28 RBI in 81 games for the Cubs last season.

The 6-foot-3, 205-pound Brazis was originally selected by the Mariners in the 28th round of the 2012 Draft out of Boston College.
