More than 50 kids participate in Mundelein's annual 'Shop with a Cop' program
The Mundelein Police Department and the Mundelein Super Target recently teamed up to help a group of children have a brighter holiday with the annual "Shop with a Cop" program.
More than 50 local children were able to participate in the program thanks to the generosity of Mundelein businesses and residents.
Police Chief Eric Guenther thanked several businesses and individuals who made the 2014 Shop with a Cop program successful.
"I can't say enough about the support we have received from Mundelein residents and the business community for this program. It's really an amazing experience to watch the officers interact with the kids and see the positive connection take place.
"Plus, so many times the children will want to purchase something for everyone in their family before they even think about finding something for themselves," Guenther said.
This is the 16th year the Mundelein Police Department has coordinated this special program in hopes of making a difference during the holidays.
"It feels great to help out children and families in need, and it's another way for us to give back to the community we care so much about and do our best to protect," Guenther said.
"Shop with a Cop" is a way for law enforcement officers to share a little Christmas cheer, as well as have positive interaction with the children that will last a lifetime.
Police department members, school employees, and social agencies have nominated children who have a social or economic need to be part of this program. As participants, the children are given a $100 gift certificate so they can buy some of the things on their Christmas wish list.
Because of this program, these children can experience a brighter Christmas, which otherwise might not have been possible.
