Indiana man shot by police had been told to demolish home

LAKE STATION, Ind. - An 84-year-old man fatally shot by officers after he fired a shotgun outside a northwestern Indiana city hall had been ordered earlier this month to demolish his home after previously being cited for not cutting the grass or cleaning up debris.

Portage Building Commissioner Mike Simiakos tells The Times of Munster he sent John Laco of Portage a letter on Dec. 1 ordering him to demolish and remove the building within 30 days.

Police are still investigating why Laco went to City Hall on Tuesday. Police say he was fatally shot by three officers after he aimed the shotgun in their direction. He was shot several times and pronounced dead at the scene.

Simiakos says the city will demolish the house.
