U.S. consumers spent 0.5% more on health care in third quarter

American consumers spent 0.5 percent more on health care in the third quarter following a 3 percent increase in the previous three months, a Commerce Department report showed today.

The figures are not adjusted for inflation or for seasonal variations. The Bureau of Economic Analysis will use the results of the Quarterly Services Survey, which is a more comprehensive breakdown of household purchases, to revise gross domestic product data for the third quarter. That report is due on Dec. 23.
