Glen Ellyn church offering Blue Christmas service

First United Methodist Church of Glen Ellyn will offer a Blue Christmas service at 7 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 14, in the chapel at 424 Forest Ave.

The service of healing and hope is a time for anyone dealing with the loss of a job or who will celebrate Christmas without the presence of a loved one, spouse, family member, friend or pet.

The Rev. Elizabeth Bowes can empathize with those who experience grief or sorrow around the holidays because she lost a parent during this season decades ago.

"It can feel like you are the only one not able to be joyful and happy around Christmas," Bowes said. "In this service, we will recognize the darkness for what it is, dark. And we will celebrate the stubborn flames of promise that proclaim that even in the darkest places God is present. We are not alone."

The church will offer a contemplative service in its chapel, where participants will read scripture, listen to quiet music, light candles and say prayers.
