Honus Wagner baseball card sells for $403,664 in online auction

A recently discovered Honus Wagner baseball card sold for $403,664 in an online auction.

The 1909 card featuring the Pittsburgh Pirates Hall of Fame shortstop was sold by a private collector and bought by an undisclosed bidder, SCP Auctions Inc. said in an e-mail.

"Unveiling a fresh T206 Honus Wagner card is a dream scenario for any hobby professional," Dan Imler, vice president at Laguna Niguel, California-based SCP, said in a statement. "Its winning bid only lends credence to its already legendary status."

A 1952 Topps Mickey Mantle rookie card sold for $268,664; a game-used bat by Jackie Robinson during his 1949 National League Most Valuable Player season went for $201,851; and an autographed 1969 jersey of the Chicago Cubs' Ernie Banks sold for $151,652.

The Wagner card, known as the Chesapeake Wagner because its seller lives on the Chesapeake Bay, was first revealed by SCP in August. It's one of about 60 such cards in existence. In April 2013, a Wagner card sold for $2.1 million -- a record for a baseball card sold at public auction.
