No. 23 Butler defeats Northwestern 65-56
INDIANAPOLIS - Kellen Dunham scored 19 points to lead No. 23 Butler past Northwestern 65-56 on Saturday.
Roosevelt Jones added 12 points and six rebounds as the Bulldogs held off a late surge by the Wildcats.
Butler (7-1) led 34-28 at halftime. The Bulldogs outscored the Wildcats 22-6 in the paint in the first half.
Butler held a six-point lead with under four minutes left when Nathan Taphorn's 3-pointer pulled Northwestern within three. The Bulldogs capped off a 5-0 run with Alex Barlow's steal and fast-break layup, pulling ahead by eight with two minutes to play and forcing the Wildcats to call a timeout.
Northwestern's Bryant McIntosh hoisted an off-balance 3-point attempt with 30 seconds left, but it bounced off the back of the rim. He had 12 points to lead the Wildcats.
Butler got the rebound and a free throw by Kameron Woods helped put away the Wildcats.
Alex Olah had 11 points and Vic Law added 10 for Northwestern (5-3). The Wildcats shot 41 percent from the floor.
The Bulldogs outscored the Wildcats 16-6 from the line. Northwestern shot 18 3-point attempts, making six, while Butler went 1 for 5 from behind the arc.
