Police: Milwaukee man chases 2 officers with knife

MILWAUKEE - Authorities have charged a 26-year-old Milwaukee man who they say chased two police officers with a large butcher knife.

Alfonso Martinez was charged Thursday with two counts of recklessly endangering safety by using a dangerous weapon. Police say they encountered Martinez on Monday while investigating a suspected double homicide.

The officers say he threatened to kill them before chasing them around parked vehicles as they yelled at him to drop the weapon. They arrested Martinez after he dropped the knife.

A criminal complaint says the two officers refrained from shooting Martinez after considering widespread criticism of officers' recent fatal use of force on citizens including Dontre Hamilton in Milwaukee, Michael Brown in Ferguson, Missouri, and Eric Garner in New York City.

Online jail records didn't indicate an attorney for Martinez.
