Wheeling athletic administrator honored nationally

A Wheeling school administrator is one of 10 education officials recognized nationally for service to interscholastic athletics.

Stephen May is assistant principal of student activities at Wheeling High School. He was awarded a 2014 distinguished service award Tuesday by the National Interscholastic Athletic Administrators Association.

May has served Cook County schools for nearly 30 years. He has been a coach, dean of students and at Wheeling since 2001. There he has maintained the Wheeling Athletic Hall of Fame and a student spirit group called "The Cat Pack."

May and nine other award winners will be honored Dec. 16 in National Harbor, Maryland during the 45th annual National Athletic Directors Conference banquet.

Awards are based on service, accomplishments and contributions to athletics. State athletic directors associations make nominations.
