Armour still making a difference for Parkside

Kelsey Armour began her high school career in style, being named all-conference as a freshman at Warren High School.

Eight years later, she was still enjoying success in her final year of collegiate soccer.

Armour, Wisconsin-Parkside's senior captain this fall, finished her career with a Rangers team that was ranked third in the nation for Division II.

Armour had 5 goals and 4 assists for Parkside which went undefeated in the Great Lakes Valley Conference and won the league tournament.

The Rangers made it to the sweet sixteen of the NCAA tournament and finished with a record of 18-1-3.

• Rockhurst senior forward and Long Grove resident Taylor Skala (St. Viator) has been selected to the 2014 Capital One Academic All-America® NCAA Division II Women's Soccer First Team.

A biology major with a 3.89 GPA, Skala is now a two-time Capital One Academic All-America selection. She was a Capital One Academic All-America third-team honoree in 2012.

Skala led the Hawks to a 14-2-3 record while collecting 16 goals and 36 points.

She led the Great Lakes Valley Conference in goals and points.

She was named the GLVC Offensive Player of the Year and earned All-GLVC honors for the fourth year in a row. The 2011 GLVC Freshman of the Year finished her career with school records in career goals (48) and career points (108).

Women's volleyball

For the past four years, Amy Choi has been a mathematics major at Lewis College.

Things have also added up quite nicely for Choi on the volleyball court during that time.

The former Vernon Hills standout setter was named honorable mention on the American Volleyball Coaches Association All-Midwest Region team.

The senior libero totaled 550 digs in 2014. Her 5.50 digs per set average ranked 23rd in the nation. She had five matches of 30 or more digs in 2014, including 30 against Ferris State in the NCAA Tournament.

Choi's performance against the Bulldogs earned her All-Midwest Region Tournament Team honors.

For her career, Choi finished with 2,108 career digs in a Lewis uniform. Her total is the most in school history and 10th in all of Division II among active student-athletes this year. Choi was named All-GLVC Honorable Mention earlier this month.

"Of course every coach is biased toward their own players, but there isn't a libero in the region I would've taken over Amy," said Lewis coach Lorelee Smith on the school's website. "She's the toughest player I've ever coached and will be missed by everyone."

Choi helped the Flyers to a 22-8 record this fall and a ninth-consecutive NCAA Tournament berth.

Women's cross country

Southern Illinois senior Kelley Gallagher ran her final cross country meet at the Midwest Regional in Peoria.

Kelley was the top runner for the Salukis

Her 6K time of 21:03 placed her 40th in a field of 225 runners.

"When I started running in college I had just two years of high school cross country experience and saw it as only training for track season," said Gallagher, who was named to the Missouri Valley All-Academic team. "Never did I think that I would be a strong 5K runner and have so much fun competing with the distance team."

Men's track

• Middlebury senior captain Kevin Wood (Stevenson) capped off his four-year varsity career with a personal record in the 8K of 24:36 at the NCAA D3 Championship in Mason, Ohio. Wood's time earned him 34th place and All-American honors.

• Lewis's Isaac Jean-Paul (Warren) won the 2014 Great Lakes Valley Conference indoor high jump title, helping the Flyers to the conference title. For his efforts, he was named the GLVC Field athlete of the year.

Women's basketball

Lake Forest College sophomore Brie Majkowski (Wheeling) averaged 12.0 points as the Foresters split a pair of games against the top two teams in the Midwest Conference Preseason Coaches Poll.

After scoring 8 points in a loss to visiting St. Norbert College, Majkowski netted a game-high 16 in a 55-48 victory at Cornell College.

She also led the Foresters with 8 rebounds at Cornell, giving her a career-high in both points and rebounds in the contest. Majkowski shot 11-for-19 (.579) from the field on the week.

Men's cross country

Butler junior Erik Peterson (Barrington) finished 22nd in a 10,000 meter time of 30:44 at the NCAA Men's Championships in Terre Haute, Ind., to earn All-American honors.
