Benedictine welcomes Christmas season with 'Advent at the Abbey'

Benedictine University and St. Procopius Abbey invite the public to attend "Advent at the Abbey" from 9:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 6.

Speakers include Fr. Becket Franks of St. Procopius Abbey and Christine M. Fletcher, associate professor in the department of theology and religious studies at Benedictine University.

"Advent prepares us to celebrate the Incarnation, the Word becoming flesh," Franks said. "We embody God in all we do, but especially at prayer, when we sit, stand and sing. Paraphrasing the words of (German theologian) Meister Eckhart, 'What use is the birth of Christ if Christ is not born within us?'"

The schedule includes a welcome and lauds, a morning prayer, readings, the Sacrament of Reconciliation, Mass, lunch in the monastic refectory, a reflection, and a closing prayer and blessing.

Space is limited to 60 participants. To reserve a place for the day and help the abbey plan for catering, contact Becket at (630) 829-9253 or bfranks@procopius.org.
