How to make the most of Black Friday

Holiday bargains are the main draw of Black Friday, but a lot goes into finding - and acquiring - the best deals. Here are some expert tips for helping you find the lowest prices and make the most of the experience:

Prepare. It's the No. 1 theme on every shopping expert's tip sheet. Get a head start on the sales, read the ads and map your route to ensure you get not just good deals but the best deals on the items you want to buy. Because so many prices and ads are offered in advance, plan ahead and know the best prices.

Eat breakfast. Sure, you may be getting up really, really early, but if you bypass this important meal, you won't have all the energy you'll need as the day grows long.

Pack a snack. In that same vein, as you run from store to store, you're going to need some pick-me-ups. Keep some fruit or an energy bar handy.

Watch your impulses. You made a plan, right? Know it and stick to it. Letting your attention wander to seemingly exciting items you - or better still, your giftees - don't really need or want will just add to your credit card bill and take away from your resources for the things you do want.

Be polite. Both the harried sales people working the holiday and your fellow consumers will thank you. Make friends with others in line. They may share some great deals or coupons they don't need.

Stay hydrated. All that running from store to store can make you warm and thirsty, even on cold days. Bring a bottle of water and drink up.

Wear comfy shoes. What feels fine at 5 in the morning may be torture by noon. Wear shoes that can keep you light on your feet all day.

Sign up. Your favorite stores may offer loyalty programs and email alerts, and you can follow them on social media. Retailers often offer their deals to their customers first. Plus, it'll keep you on top of sales alerts.

Look online first. Before you hit the pavement, use the Internet and mobile apps to compare prices. Try websites like google.com/shopping or scan codes in the store with apps such as RedLaser. Both will show you what other businesses are charging for the same product. A compilation of newspaper ads from national retailers is on the app, Black Friday by Brads Deals, and on websites like blackfriday.com or bfads.net

Get more than credit. Your credit cards, when used responsibly, can be an asset. Many offer built-in extended warranties for electronics, or have signup bonuses or other perks for spending, say, $500.

Stay positive! Gravitate toward those who are enjoying the spirit of the season. Don't let the grumps and complainers get you down.
