Fire damages 3 townhouses in Vernon Hills

A plumber using a torch in a Vernon Hills townhouse building Monday apparently started a fire that has left three homes uninhabitable, Countryside fire officials said.

Fire officials responded to the call about 9:30 a.m. on the 900 block of Jackson Court and arrived to find smoke coming from the attic area of the east side of a two-story townhouse.

A homeowner there told firefighters that a plumber was using a torch in the second-floor bathroom wall. Two units that shared an adjoining wall were affected, fire officials said.

No damage estimates were available.
