Fire damages Wheeling town home, displaces one

A fire that spread from an attached garage to a two-story town home Saturday afternoon in Wheeling displaced one resident, authorities said.

A 911 caller who lives in the four-unit building on the 700 block of Barnaby Place smelled smoke about 1 p.m.

The first arriving firefighters found the garage engulfed in flames, Wheeling Battalion Chief John Baumgartner said. No cars were inside.

The fire spread into the building's attic, but firefighters were able to put it out before it caused "any real damage" to the interior of the town homes, Baumgartner said. It took crews about 20 minutes to bring the blaze under control.

Still, one of the four units was left uninhabitable. The estimated cost of the damage was not available.

There were no injuries to firefighters or residents. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
