Elected leaders representing the suburbs and state reacted along party lines to President Obama's speech last night, in which he outlines his plan to spare roughly 5 million people in the United States illegally from deportation. Congressional Democrats from the suburbs hailed the president's directive as a way of addressing immigrants who have abided by the law since their arrival, but Republicans said Obama is overstepping his authority. Former Zion man pleads not guilty to 2005 murders

A former Zion resident accused of the notorious 2005 murder of two little girls in a Zion park pleaded not guilty to first-degree murder in Lake County court yesterday. Jorge Avila-Torrez, 25, stared stoically ahead while flanked by two jail guards as Judge Daniel Shanes explained he was charged with 18 varying counts of first-degree murder for killing 8-year-old Laura Hobbs and 9-year-old Krystal Tobias. Laura's father, Jerry, was convicted of the murders, then freed, settling a lawsuit with the county for $8 million. Full story.

Fox River Grove death investigated

The McHenry County coroner's office said yesterday it is investigating the death of a 50-year-old woman whose body was found Wednesday evening in a room at the Fox River Grove Motel. Full story.

5 years for Naperville man in 7-Eleven robberies

A Naperville man charged with two armed robberies reported in one week in May at the same 7-Eleven in Naperville was sentenced yesterday to five years in prison. Adam Zace, 30, of the 400 block of Kiowa Drive, pleaded guilty to one count of aggravated robbery with a dangerous weapon or firearm. Full story.

Could residents challenge Lake Barrington's Speedway vote?

A legal challenge could be in the works against the Lake Barrington village board's Wednesday-night-into-Thursday-morning vote to approve construction of a Speedway gas station on the corner of Northwest Highway and Kelsey Road. After a 7½-hour board meeting ended just before 2:30 a.m. Thursday with a 6-0 vote in favor of Speedway's proposal, Lake Barrington resident Mike Rothmann, who is an attorney, said legal action might be opponents' next option. No history-making mark for Bulls

The Bulls had a chance to make history last night in Sacramento. They could have won their first seven road games of the season for the first time in franchise history. It didn't work out, though, as the Bulls couldn't sustain a fast start and lost to the Kings 103-88 at Sleep Train Arena. Full story.

Hawks win

It didn't take long for 22-year-old Adam Clendening to take advantage of his NHL debut last night. On his second shift of his very first NHL game, Clendening scored on his very first shot and the Hawks went on to win 4-3 in a wild one at the Scotiabank Saddledome. Full story.
