Lake Zurich Middle School South takes on 'Hairspray Jr.'

Wednesday was dress rehearsal day for nearly 100 students who make up the cast and crew of Lake Zurich Middle School South's presentation of "Hairspray Jr."

The stage musical is based on the film and smash-hit Broadway production.

The story is based in Baltimore in 1962 with a plus size teen Tracy Turnblad's big dream to dance on the popular Corny Collins Show. In the process, she fights for justice as she tries to dethrone the reigning Miss Teen Hairspray, Amber von Tussle.

"This is not a show usually done by middle schools," explained director Jacqui Heinemann. "I have always wanted to do this one because students can learn about the '60s and segregation through theater. We have several civil rights TV clips that run in the background."

The play will be presented Thursday, Nov. 20, and Friday, Nov. 21 at 7 p.m., and Saturday, Nov. 22 at 2 p.m. at the school at 435 W. Cuba Road in Lake Zurich. The cost is $10 for adults and $8 for students/children.

Brenda, played by Gabby Dudek, holds a can of hair spray as she joins the cast in singing "The Nicest Kids in Town" during Wednesday's dress rehearsal for "Hairspray Jr." at Lake Zurich Middle School South. Performances are Thursday, Nov. 20, through Saturday, Nov. 22. Gilbert R. Boucher II/gboucher@dailyherald.com
