Milwaukee considers settling strip search lawsuit

MILWAUKEE - The Milwaukee city attorney is recommending the city pay $95,500 to settle a federal civil rights lawsuit alleging an illegal body cavity search of a drug suspect by a former police officer.

The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports City Attorney Grant Langley is recommending the Common Council approve the payout to settle all of Joe Bohannon's claims against the city, its police chief and former officer Michael Vagnini.

Bohannon says in the lawsuit that Vagnini pulled him over in 2008 and conducted a public search in which Vagnini recovered a plastic bag of cocaine. Bohannon says officers struck and kicked him when he tried to escape.

Vagnini was sentenced in June 2013 to 26 months in prison for illegal strip and body cavity searches on dozens of drug suspects.
