Lake-effect snow snarls northern Indiana traffic

SOUTH BEND, Ind. - Lake-effect snowfall in northern Indiana has snarled traffic with low visibility and slick roadways.

Police says dozens of collisions and slide-offs have occurred Thursday morning in the South Bend area, with the U.S. 31 bypass and the Indiana Toll Road reported as slick and hazardous. WSBT-TV reports a school bus slid off U.S. 20 near the town of New Carlisle, but no injuries were immediately reported.

The National Weather Service issued a winter weather advisory for LaPorte, St. Joseph and Elkhart counties. It says lake-effect snow bands could continue through the afternoon, with quick accumulations of up to two inches of snow possible in places.

The Fort Wayne area saw a dusting of overnight snow, which contributed to several crashes on Interstates 69 and 469.
