Libertyville students stack up to a world record

Students at Butterfield School in Libertyville were stacking up a storm Thursday as they participated in the 9th annual World Sport Stacking Association "Stack Up," and tried to pile their way into the history books.

The students were joining an attempt to break the Guinness World Record for most people sport-stacking in multiple locations. The goal is to reach 600,000 people world wide to top last year's record of 555,932.

Cup stacking has been part of the school's physical education curriculum for the last 12 years, said teacher Pat Krech.

"They're jacked up," Krech said of the students. "We've been doing this in class for the last two weeks."

About 400 students took part in the event throughout the day. Kids raced against each other and a clock in stacking competitions.

They joined fellow stackers from across the United States and in countries such as Hungary, Germany, Israel, South Korea, New Zealand, Colombia, and Taiwan, a report said.

"Sport stacking is an activity enjoyed by all ages and cultures," said Bob Fox, WSSA founder and executive director. "It promotes hand-eye coordination, brain activation, fitness, teamwork, speed and lots of fun."
