Loyola names new athletic director

Loyola University has named a new director of intercollegiate athletics.

He is Steve Watson, who served as director of athletics at St. Bonaventure University in Allegany, New York for the past seven years.

In announcing Watson's appointment Wednesday, Loyola President the Rev. Michael Garanzini said Watson brings "tremendous experience and enthusiasm" to the university. He said Watson impressed him with his ability to build and sustain a successful athletic program, especially in basketball.

Under Watson, St. Bonaventure saw the development of new sports infrastructure and a resurrection of the university's basketball programs. Both the men's and women's basketball teams made it to the NCAA Tournaments in 2012.

Watson says Loyola is the perfect fit for him. He added he is grateful for the opportunity given him by St. Bonaventure.
