Chicago theater honored at White House

First Lady Michelle Obama is presenting the Chicago Shakespeare Theater with the prestigious National Arts and Humanities Youth Program Award.

Marilyn Halperin is the theater's director of education and the Ray and Judy McCaskey Education chairwoman. She accepts the award Monday for a program called "CPS Shakespeare." It's an arts-in-education program with the Chicago Public Schools.

Prosser Career Academy junior Jennifer Guadalupe Gonzalez is a participant. She has been chosen as student representative to address elected, civic and cultural leaders during the East Room ceremony.

The National Arts and Humanities Youth Program Award recognizes the country's best creative youth development programs for using the arts and humanities to boost academic achievement.

CPS Shakespeare is one of only 12 programs nationwide recognized this year.
