Sheriff: Man caught on I-90 with $20,000 worth of heroin

A 37-year-old Chicago man has been charged with transporting nearly a half pound of heroin worth $20,000 along Interstate 90, according to the Kane County sheriff's department.

Sershawn C. Nicholson, of the 2000 block of West 65th Street, was being held on $300,000 bail, meaning he must post $30,000 to be released while the charges are pending.

Nicholson, who was on parole at the time, is next due in court Nov. 20. He faces up to 30 years in prison if convicted of possession of a controlled substance with intent to deliver, according to court records.

According the Kane County sheriff's department, deputies pulled over Nicholson at about 10 a.m. Wednesday for an improper lane change as he drove west on Interstate 90 near Powers Road near Gilberts.

A deputy smelled the odor of marijuana smoke coming from the vehicle as he spoke to Nicholson, authorities said.

Deputies searched the vehicle and seized 213 grams of heroin, or about 7.5 ounces, with a street value of $20,000, authorities said.
