55-year-old man killed in Tri-State crash near I-88 exit ramp

A 55-year-old man was killed in a crash on the northbound Tri-State Tollway near the I-88 exit early Tuesday, authorities said.

Illinois State Police Master Sgt. Carlita Joe said a vehicle changed lanes at milemarker 29 in Oak Brook in front of a semitrailer at about 4:50 a.m. The maneuver caused the truck to slow down, Joe said, and the victim slammed his red 2013 Ford into the rear of the semitrailer.

The truck driver got out of his vehicle and walked to the rear to view the crash in time to see a 2001 gold Pontiac hit the red Ford from behind, Joe said.

The victim was pronounced dead at the scene, Joe said. The driver of the gold Pontiac was transported to Good Samaritan Hospital in Downers Grove with nonlife threatening injuries.

Joe said the accident remains under investigation. The roadway was reopened at about 7:30 a.m.
