Republican Jesiel retains state House seat

Republican state Rep. Sheri Jesiel secured a full term in the House on Tuesday.

Jesiel had a strong lead over Democratic challenger Loren Karner all night in the race for the 61st District seat.

With ballots in all 70 precincts counted Tuesday, Jesiel had 17,498 votes to Karner's 12,547, unofficial results showed. That count gives Jesiel more than 58 percent of the vote.

Jesiel was appointed to fill the 61st District seat after longtime GOP lawmaker JoAnn Osmond retired in July. Jesiel's months of office gave her legislative experience and name recognition in a district that historically votes Republican.

Both candidates are from Winthrop Harbor. The 61st District covers much of northern Lake County.
