Nybo declares win for 24th Senate seat, jabs opponent, Cullertons

Incumbent Republican Chris Nybo declared victory Tuesday to retain his seat in the 24th Senate District over Democratic challenger Suzanne Glowiak.

With all 222 precincts unofficially reporting in Cook and DuPage counties, Nybo held a lead of 57 percent to Glowiak's 43 percent.

Nybo, an attorney from Elmhurst, was appointed in August to fill the remaining term of former Sen. Kirk Dillard, who resigned the post to chair the Regional Transportation Authority board.

"This turnout shows a clear rejection by DuPage County voters of the Cullerton cousins and their attempt to spend a quarter-million dollars to buy a seat in DuPage. Our voters are smarter than that," Nybo said, referring to Senate Majority Leader John Cullerton and State Rep. Tom Cullerton of Villa Park, both Democrats.

"(Glowiak) ran the most deplorable campaign I've ever experienced. It was disgusting that she spent $750,000 to put out outright untruths and lies about my record."

Nybo celebrated his victory with his supporters at Capone's in Lombard.

Despite the nastiness of the campaign, Nybo said he's excited to build upon the work he's done since August.

"I'm going to do what I always have and that's work hard, call the shots as I see them and be independent when I need to be," he said. "I'm going back to work to get this state's economy back on track and get rid of the pervasive corruption that we can't seem to get rid of in this state."

Nybo has also pledged to continue his support for rolling back the state income tax to previous levels and the pension plan signed into law, which is currently being reviewed by the Supreme Court.

He served one term in the Illinois House starting in 2011 but ran for the Illinois Senate the next year after Democrats redrew political boundaries.

Nybo lost that 2012 race - a primary election contest against Dillard - a little more than two years before taking over for him in the Senate.

The 24th District includes all or parts of Clarendon Hills, Darien, Downers Grove, Elmhurst, Glen Ellyn, Hinsdale, Lisle, Lombard, Oak Brook, Oakbrook Terrace, Villa Park, Westmont, Wheaton and Willowbrook.
