Dist. 54's 1,000-book classrooms praised

The Schaumburg Township Elementary District 54 school board plans to visit 19 teachers across the district in November to praise them for filling their classroom libraries with more than 1,000 books.

A significant body of research suggests that the more children read, the better readers they become. As part of the district's Literary Task Force, officials learned that experts recommend that every classroom should have 1,000 books to meet the wide range of abilities and interests of the children.

Teachers recognized are Colleen Conway and Heather Walz at Armstrong School; Kourtney Arreguin, Allison Bond, Beth Engelking, Amy Grelck, Jamie May, Laura Hyzy, Holly Larsen, Megan McCabe, Samantha Plaia and Susan Walsh at Blackwell; Shannon Hart at Collins; Jessica Albers and Mark Shydlowski at Eisenhower; Michelle Mogilinski at Fairview; Gina DeFalco at Lakeview; and Iris Santiago and Rachel Niedospial at MacArthur.

They join 245 other District 54 teachers previously recognized.
