Kennedy comparison no compliment

It is always interesting how political figures of opposite views are compared to one another. You recently published a letter from Kate Cuchiara of Elgin lionizing the legacy of Ted Kennedy and his family to Bruce Rauner.

She carefully omitted how the Kennedy family started its family fortune through bootlegging alcoholic beverages through Canada during the Prohibition Era and the subsequent connection to organized crime which came in handy during the 1960 presidential election vote tally right here in Cook County. She also omitted the fact that Joseph Kennedy was a supporter of Nazi Germany and Adolf Hitler during his tenure as American ambassador to England prior to the outbreak of World War II, which led to his being asked to step down from that post and the end of his political career.

Did she also forget what happened on Chapaquiddick Island during the summer of 1969? Ted Kennedy never spent a minute in prison for leaving the scene of an accident where a young woman died. A book by Joseph McGinnis titled "Senatorial Privilege" outlines why that was so. A conservative politician like Bruce Rauner would have paid a much different price. As to his reputation as a "womanizer," Ted Kennedy had no equal.

Yes, Ted Kennedy did support every liberal cause that came down the pike. He was way out in front of Barack Obama in his zest to "fundamentally transform" America through the redistribution of wealth and the creation of a permanent Democratic voting bloc dependent on government welfare programs. Bruce Rauner is against that as are a growing number of Americans. That is really what this gubernatorial election is about.
