Bomb threat cancels activities at Neuqua Valley, school open Friday

After school activities were canceled on Thursday due to a bomb threat at Neuqua Valley High School in Naperville, but officials said school will be open on Friday because police do not consider it a "viable" threat.

Principal Bob McBride called parents on Thursday afternoon and later posted a message about the threat on the school website.

"An email was received late (Thursday) afternoon, making a bomb threat for Friday," the message said. "The Naperville Police Department was immediately contacted to begin investigating the situation. As a precaution, we also canceled all after-school activities on campus."

That included an orchestra concert and a regional volleyball match between Benet Academy and St. Charles North that was to be hosted at Neuqua Valley. The game was moved to Benet in Lisle.

"Please know that neither the police nor school officials believe this to be a viable threat," the message from the principal continued. "Nonetheless, in order to be as cautious as possible, both campuses are being thoroughly searched twice this evening, prior to the start of school on Friday."

McBride said additional police officers will be at the school Friday morning as a precaution.

"Please know the safety of our students is always the highest priority. We appreciate the work of the Naperville Police in keeping our students safe," McBride said.

An update posted to the message after 7 p.m. Thursday said that no devices were found after two thorough seraches of the high school by police and canine units.

"We expect school to open smoothly (Friday) and operate as normal," the update read. "The police are continuing to investigate in order to find the person responsible. If your child has any information, please encourage him or her to contact the Naperville Police."
