Woman in stable condition after being hit by train

A Wisconsin woman has been upgraded to stable condition after being hit by a Canadian National freight train late Saturday night, authorities said.

Skyelene Karaszweski, 25, from Genoa City, was flown via helicopter to Advocate Condell Medical Center in Libertyville, where she was initially in the intensive care unit, Antioch Police Chief Craig Somerville said Monday.

Somerville said officers were called to the train tracks at Route 83 near Main Street at 9:07 p.m. for a report of a suspicious person walking north along the tracks. Upon arrival, officers spoke with a conductor and engineer of a parked train who said Karaszweski was standing next to the tracks and refused to move.

Witnesses to the accident said the train attempted to brake, Somerville said, but hit the woman while traveling at 35 mph, Somerville said.

Karaszweski was found by officers on the ground between two train tracks, about 275 feet from the Main Street railroad crossing.

Somerville said Karaszweski might have been impaired at the time of the accident. He said authorities are awaiting toxicology tests to be completed.
