County commissioner to make Chicago mayoral run

Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel will be facing a second challenger when he seeks re-election next year

Cook County Commissioner Jesus Garcia said Monday he will challenge Emanuel in the nonpartisan February election. In announcing his plans, Garcia said the city is "not headed in the right direction." He cites school closures last year.

Garcia joins Chicago Alderman Bob Fioretti in challenging Emanuel. Neither are as well-known as Chicago Teachers Union President Karen Lewis. She was seen potentially as Emanuel's most formidable foe until she decided against running after disclosing an illness.

Emanuel says he is not concerned about Garcia's potential impact on the mayoral race.

If no candidate receives more than half of the ballots cast in February, a runoff between the top two candidates will be held in April.
