Huntley's Smith wins regional title

Huntley junior Keagan Smith beat the field on Saturday, winning the individual championship at the Class 3A Rockford Guilford boys cross country regional.

Smith ran the course in a time of 15:03.22, almost 33 seconds better than Hononegah's Jared Christiansen.

The Red Raiders took second place as a team to qualify for next Saturday's St. Charles East sectional. Also scoring for Huntley were junior Mike Grocholski (4th), junior Seth Conroy (5th), freshman Joey Ozzauto (13th) and junior Zach Hollman (15th).

Hononegah was the team champion with 35 points, 3 better than Huntley.

South Elgin took third place with 104 points to advance as well. Scoring points for the Storm were junior Bryan Tiaczani (10th), senior Max Keough (12th), freshman Hector Rodriguez (25th), sophomore Jake Harris (26th) and sophomore Brad Kmiec (31st).

Class 3A at Glenbard North: Elgin took the sixth and final team qualifying spot for the St. Charles East sectional with 154 points. St. Charles East was the team champ with 40. Junior Brandon Copeland (4th) and senior Logan Jostes (5th) led the Maroons. Also scoring points for Elgin were senior Scott Valena (35th), senior Will Marston (52nd) and junior Victor Balcazar (58th).

Qualifying individuals included Bartlett junior Justin Isla (21st), Hawks' junior Matt Edmier (34th) and Streamwood junior Robert Douglas (36th).

Class 3A at Palatine: Crystal Lake South finished fifth with 97 points and Jacobs sixth with 102 as each team qualified for next Saturday's Schaumburg sectional.

Leading the Gators were sophomore Jonothon Prus (7th), freshman Jack Becker (11th), senior Justin Miller (17th), junior Tommy Melone (22nd) and junior Doug Cain (40th).

Scoring for Jacobs came from senior Matthew Goldby (9th), junior Kyle Ross (12th), sophomore Garrett Brenizer (23rd), senior Michael Blanding (26th) and senior Joseph Sipiorski (32nd).

Qualifying as individuals for Schaumburg were Cary-Grove seniors Tyler Stordahl (25th) and John Cody (31st) and Dundee-Crown sophomore Mario Zavala (33rd).

Lake Zurich won the team title with 52 points and McHenry senior Jesse Reiser was the individual champ in a time of 14:47.

Class 2A: Burlington Central senior Clay Musial finished ninth at the Woodstock regional to advance to next week's Kaneland sectional. Also advancing for the Rockets was junior Nick Harvey, who finished 20th. Hampshire sophomore Jacob Oury finished in 17th place and will also compete at Kaneland next week.

Class 1A: Harvest Christian won the team championship at the Aurora Christian regional with 57 points and will advance to the Lisle sectional. Senior Jake Adams (5th), sophomore Riley Steiner (9th), sophomore Michael Sisko (11th), freshman Andrew Debresco (18th) and junior Caleb Vislisel (20th) led the Lions. Also advancing to Lisle was Westminster Christian freshman Jason Yaccino (15th) and Warriors' sophomore Tom Danner (16th). Aurora Christian sophomore Tanner Chada won the race.
