Ex-soldier gets 15 years for Illinois robbery

EAST ST. LOUIS, Ill. - A former soldier has been sentenced in Illinois to 15 years in federal prison after being accused of robbing a convenience store.

Twenty-year-old Denzell Grant was sentenced Friday in U.S. District Court in East St. Louis. That's where he pleaded guilty to felony charges of interfering with commerce by robbery and illegal possession of a firearm.

Authorities say Grant entered Mac's One Stop Shop in southwestern Illinois' Swansea in October of last year. There, he pointed a handgun at a clerk and demanded money. Investigators say the two men struggled and the gun discharged. No one was injured.

In addition to a prison term, Grant has been ordered to pay $10,500 in restitution.

Grant was based at Texas' Fort Hood but was from South Carolina.
