8 years for Aurora home invasion, hammer attack

An Aurora man has been sentenced to eight years in prison for breaking into his ex-girlfriend's home in July 2013, injuring her and stealing her cellphone, according to prosecutors and court records.

Angelo M. Parra, 24, of the 500 block of East Ashland Avenue, was convicted of home invasion and residential burglary after a bench trial before Kane County Judge John Barsanti in July 2014.

According to prosecutors, Parra and two others kicked in the door at the woman's home on the 1300 block of South Glen Circle at about 2:30 a.m. July 12, 2013.

The trio headed upstairs and took the woman's money and cellphone. Parra also took a hammer from a drawer and struck the victim on the leg, prosecutors said.

The intruders also found a second person on a couch in a different room and took her phone before Parra also hit her with a hammer on the leg, prosecutors said.

Parra's former girlfriend recognized him despite a bandanna on his face, and he was arrested, prosecutors said.

Barsanti sentenced Parra on Friday; he faced between six and 30 years in prison.

Parra gets credit for being held 463 days at the Kane County jail since his arrest. He can have his sentence cut in half under state law for good behavior in prison.

According to court records, Parra has previous arrests and convictions for property damage, resisting arrest and domestic battery.
