Lawsuit says Elgin hair salon injured 7-year-old
A 7-year-old girl went to get a haircut in Elgin this spring, but ended up with a trip to the hospital instead.
That's the allegation in a lawsuit recently filed in Kane County against Nicasio Opopeza and Nico's Hair Salon, 308 S. McLean Blvd., Elgin.
The girl's mother, Monika Valdivia, seeks unspecified damages in excess of $50,000 for the haircut gone wrong.
Loren Golden, the attorney representing the Valdivia and her daughter, argues Opopeza lacerated the girl's scalp by negligently using "cutting tools" during the haircut.
"(The girl) needed staples. She was cut," said Golden, who declined to specify how many staples his client received or where on her head she was injured. "She went in for a haircut. She came out and had to go to the emergency room."
Opopeza could not be reached for comment.
The two sides are next due in court Jan. 8.
Lotto ticket sparks trouble:
A 31-year-old Carpentersville man is facing possible prison time after he was accused of stealing a scratch-off lottery ticket.
Carlos Pagan, of the 0-99 block of Hickory Drive, was arrested last week and charged with felony aggravated battery to a police officer, resisting arrest, and theft, according to Kane County court records.
Pagan is accused of taking a scratch-off ticket from a man's back pocket and elbowing a police officer in the jaw, causing the officer to fall and scrape his leg, records show.
Pagan is being held at the Kane County jail on $50,000 bail, meaning he must post $5,000 to be released while the charges are pending.
If convicted of the most serious charge, he faces anywhere from probation to seven years in prison. He is next due in court Thursday.
No news is good news:
The North Aurora Police Department last week conducted a police canine walk through of Jewel Middle School, 1501 Waterford Road. Police said school administration asked for the walk through, which was completed with assistance from canine units from the Kane County Sheriff's Office and police from Naperville and Aurora,
No drugs or other contraband was found during the unannounced walk through, during which teachers and students remained in their classrooms, police said.
