Prairie Ridge turns the tables on Jacobs
This time it was Prairie Ridge's turn.
Jacobs edged the Wolves at last week's Fox Valley Conference girls tennis tournament, but it was Prairie Ridge taking the team title at the Huntley sectional Saturday.
Prairie Ridge totaled 25 points to 19 for Jacobs. Crystal Lake Central was close behind in third with 16 points.
Prairie Ridge's No. 1 doubles team of Natalie Favia and Mikaela McNally defeated Jacobs' team of Morgan Vachio and Sara Elliott in the semifinals and wound up taking the title. Vachio and Elliott took third place when Prairie Ridge's No. 2 team defaulted due to a scheduling conflict.
In singles, Jacobs' Ashley Kosy, the top seed, was upset in the final by Woodstock's Ana Fedmasu, 6-2, 6-1. Kosy won No. 1 singles at the FVC tournament, but couldn't pull off a repeat.
Kosy led the first set 2-1, but Fedmasu won the next 10 games. Fedmasu controlled the match with her power strokes while Kosy struggled with her serve and fell victim to unforced errors.
Kosy breezed through the first 3 rounds, losing just 6 games total, but ran into a determined opponent in the final.
"I thought I was in control," said Fedmasu. "I really wanted this really badly, so I just kept saying the whole time that I'm going to stick through this and stay on the court as long as it takes to win this."
"I was just trying to give it all I've got and not give up," said Kosy, who had split 4 previous matches with Fedmasu this year.
In the third-place match, Prairie Ridge's Annie Timm edged Hampshire's Hanna Hougland, 7-5, 6-3. Hougland was playing her third match of the day, including a three-setter in the first round.
"By my third match I was really worn out," she said. "My legs felt like lead."
Favia and McNally prevailed 6-2, 6-3 in a semifinal match that was closer than the score indicated. The Jacobs duo led the second set 3-2 before the Wolves' pair rallied to win the final 4 games. They then swept past Central's team of Maddie Fox and Carley George, 6-2, 6-0 in the final.
