App reviews: Leaf Peepr, NBA Game Time

Leaf Peepr

Leaf season is officially here. All around the country the colors are changing, and fast. To make sure you catch peak color, consider downloading Leaf Peepr, a mobile devices application that relies on ground reports from fall color lovers. You can also submit reports of your own, with pictures, to help others track day-to-day changes.

The app, which asks for but does not require your location information, is only as good as its reports - as is true of any service that relies on user-submitted information.

But Leaf Peepr, from the folks at Yankee Magazine, offers a great guide to the state of the great outdoors, whether you're planning a road trip or just a leafy staycation. Free, for iOS and Android devices and the Firefox market.

NBA Game Time

With baseball season rounding third, the NBA is close to tip-off. And the league has released a new app, NBA Game Time, to track the 2014-15 season. Users can follow a favorite team (yes, fair-weathers, you can change it), get to know players, keep an eye on stats and read up on NBA news. The app even shows the Twitter feed of your hometown team.

Of course, no promotional app would be complete without a few perks for the league. You can buy tickets in the app Ticketmaster, shop for official league swag and buy in-app upgrades for access to streaming video from the NBA League Pass. Sprint customers with unlimited plans have free access to NBA Game Time Plus for ad-free radio broadcasts and game highlights. Free, for iOS and Android devices, including Amazon devices.
