Libertyville gets a kick out of Chartier's successes

Move over, Riley Lees.

Those cheers - maybe the loudest of the night during Libertyville's 55-0 win over visiting Mundelein on homecoming last Friday - were for Corbin Chartier.

The 5-foot-3, 120-pound, goggles-wearing Chartier kicked a pair of PATs in the second half, after the hosts built a 35-0 lead by halftime on the strength of 3 touchdowns by star-quarterback Lees.

Call it a big night for a little guy.

"He's a really good teammate," Libertyville senior offensive lineman Atakan Pekpolat said of Chartier, who's a junior. "He's a good guy. He brings great effort every day. He's always the first one out to practice and the last one to leave. He's always practicing kicks."

"No one kicks more kicks than him," Wildcats coach Mike Jones said of Chartier.

Chartier's teammates mobbed their tiny kicker and hoisted him high in the air, Rudy style, after his fist PAT, which was his first varsity point. After his second kick, a stoked Chartier even delivered a couple of fist pumps before running off the field.

"He gets really happy," Pekpolat said. "So we get happy too when we see him do (well). It's just an all-around good feeling."

Dunk-fest: It hasn't been a great season for Grayslake Central, which hosts Grayslake North tonight, but the Rams got their kicks with a school-record kick from Kevin Dunk last Friday night.

Dunk drilled a 45-yard field goal at Woodstock North, as the Rams fell to 0-7 with a 57-9 defeat.

Dunk broke the team record of Jon Gurchak, who kicked a 44-yard field goal against Senn in the first round of the 2010 state playoffs.

Dunk also has 6 receptions, including a 64-yard touchdown grab, this season.

Shout-out for the shutout: Libertyville's shutout of Mundelein was the Wildcats' first in almost two years to the date.

The Libertyville defense had not posted a goose egg since Week 8 of the 2012 campaign, when the Wildcats beat Zion-Benton 17-0. The previous week, Libertyville edged Lake Zurich 3-0.
