Mt. Prospect parks await report on wave pool needs

Mount Prospect Park District officials are getting ready to take a hard look at the 30-year-old Big Surf Wave Pool.

A report on the pool's existing condition and operations will be presented to the park board at its Nov. 12 meeting, officials said. The district hopes to use the report when considering future improvements.

"It should be a pretty comprehensive look at what we have over there," Park District Executive Director Greg Kuhs said. "We haven't seen the report yet, so I don't know specific details, but I expect it will include some options for possible repairs or changes."

FGM Architects of Oak Brook is preparing the report.

Big Surf, located at 411 S. Maple St., Mount Prospect, is a key summer attraction for the park district. Turbine blowers generate 3-foot waves in the pool, then allow the water to settle every 10 minutes. Big Surf was built in 1984, and the park district says it remains one of just three outdoor wave pools in the state.

In its proposal to the park district, FMG said it would study just about every aspect of the pool's operations, from its pumps and filtration systems to its seating and concession areas. The park district is paying FMG roughly $8,500 plus expenses to complete the report.

Based on what the report recommends, the district will try to schedule renovations as soon as is feasible, Kuhs said.

The Nov. 12 park district meeting is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m. at the Central Community Center, 1000 W. Central Road, Mount Prospect.
