Women vote crucial to forest preserve

I enjoyed the well-written article (front page Oct. 4) on women's suffrage in Illinois. The Forest Preserve District of DuPage County was created in 1915 because of the women's vote. Yes - 1,057 men plus 593 women. No - 1,096 men plus 79 women.

Today the district owns and manages over 25,000 acres of prairies, woodlands and wetlands. Each year, its 60 forest preserves, 145 miles of trails, five education centers and scores of programs welcome over 4 million visitors. These contributions to quality of life and economic strength in DuPage County are highly valued.

In 1913, (thank you, Gov. Dunne!), hard working, visionary citizens gave Illinois women the right to vote in local elections. Men and women of today, this civic responsibility is equally important in the 21st century.

Please vote on November 4.

Commissioner, District 5

Forest Preserve District of DuPage County
