Project to stabilize section of Chicago lakeshore
Officials in Chicago held a groundbreaking ceremony Monday for a $31.5 million project to stabilize the shoreline and ease congestion at the Fullerton Avenue Beach on Lake Michigan.
Mayor Rahm Emanuel's office says the project will create nearly six acres of new park district land.
The work will dovetail with a planned renovation of the Theater on the Lake facility, which will be remodeled to house larger audiences and year-round programming. The Theater on the Lake building was a tuberculosis sanitarium when it opened in 1920. During World War II, it was used as a USO Center.
The funding comes from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, the City of Chicago and the Park District. Construction is set to be concluded by the summer of 2016.
