Jimmy Carter set to speak at Illinois College

JACKSONVILL - Former President Jimmy Carter is scheduled to speak about a Middle East peace initiative at Illinois College.

The (Springfield) State Register-Journal reports Carter will give an address Tuesday at an event that's open to the public.

Illinois College is in Jacksonville, located about 35 miles west of Springfield.

The 90-year-old Carter will speak as part of the Phi Alpha lecture series. It's named for a literary society at Illinois College. Previous speakers have included Democratic U.S. Sen. Dick Durbin of Illinois and journalist Helen Thomas.

Carter served in the White House from 1977 to 1981. He won a Nobel Peace Prize in 2002.
