Libertyville-Mundelein Historical Society reviews Libertyville 100 Years Ago

One hundred years ago, the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand would propel most of the planet into the First World War, the Ford Motor Company introduces the eight-hour work day and Charlie Chaplin made his motion picture debut.

During this volatile time in the world, what was life like in Libertyville?

At the next Libertyville-Mundelein Historical Society meeting, local history librarian and LMHS Board Member Jenny Barry will look back at the people, businesses and key events in Libertyville that occurred in 1914.

In preparation, Jenny has scanned through microfilm of the local newspaper, the Lake County Independent, and pulled hundreds of news articles, social notes, and advertisements. Jenny says "It has been tough whittling them down to just the highlights!"

During the presentation Jenny will touch on a few people of interest, including Dennis Limberry, the town marshal; business news including the Meredith Flower & Vegetable Company's financial difficulties; what Libertyville residents did for entertainment; and issues of the day including the temperance battle.

The program will be held Monday, October 20, 2014 at 7pm at the Cook Memorial Public Library - Cook Park Meeting Room, 413 N. Milwaukee Ave., Libertyville, IL. No registration required. For more information visit http://www.lmhistory.org or call 847-362-2330.
