Chicago man pleads guilty in Wisconsin shooting

LA CROSSE, Wis. - A Chicago man who shot a Wisconsin woman in the back has pleaded guilty to attempted homicide.

Cordero Short faces up to 40 years in prison when he is sentenced in November after reaching a deal with prosecutors. The 23-year-old pleaded guilty to attempted first-degree intentional homicide as party to the crime in La Crosse County court.

Prosecutors will recommend a prison sentence of no more than 10 years as part of the agreement.

They say Short aimed a gun at a man in June 2013 in La Crosse when the 24-year-old woman walked in the line of fire. She had a bullet removed from her abdomen in surgery.

Short discarded the gun in a garbage can and remained at-large until November 2013. Investigators arrested him in a Chicago suburb.
